12 Jun NEWS | Sarasota Scholar Receives International Women in STEM Award

A Sarasota woman has been recognized on the global stage for her work at the intersection of science, technology, and space exploration.
Kayla Taylor, a PhD student at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach campus, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Zonta International Women in STEM Award, a prestigious honor awarded to a select group of women worldwide. The award includes a $10,000 grant to support her continued research.
Taylor was nominated by the Zonta Club of Sarasota, which has awarded more than $83,000 in grants locally to support women and girls through its fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
“Kayla’s achievements reflect both exceptional academic rigor and a deep commitment to expanding opportunities for women in STEM,” said Marjorie Schmoyer, president of the Zonta Club of Sarasota. “We are proud to support her and to see her recognized on an international level.”
Taylor is pursuing a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science. Her research examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence in aviation and aerospace systems, as well as broader questions of ethics, access, and the future of space and transportation technologies.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in astronomy and astrophysics and a master’s degree in aviation with a specialization in space studies, both from Embry-Riddle. Her academic work spans disciplines, from space policy and light pollution to the role of communication and equity in STEM fields.
“I’m honored to receive this award from Zonta International,” said Taylor. “Support like this makes it possible to continue research that not only advances technology, but also helps ensure those advancements are thoughtful, inclusive, and accessible.”
In addition to her technical research, Taylor is an active STEM communicator and writer, contributing to published work on topics ranging from satellite impacts on astronomy to the experiences of women in science.
The Zonta International Women in STEM Award recognizes women pursuing advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, with a focus on leadership, academic achievement, and a commitment to advancing opportunities for women in these fields.
The Zonta Club of Sarasota is part of Zonta International and works locally and globally to advance the status of women and girls through service, advocacy, and education
